Tragically, on September 11, 1999, during a practice session at Laguna Seca Raceway, he suffered a fatal accident at the Corkscrew corner, resulting in a basilar skull fracture. To honor his legacy, the Fundación Gonzalo Rodríguez was established, focusing on road safety and child welfare initiatives in Latin America.
